Second Perspective is an interactive website which tells the story of a 1.5 generation Chinese woman, and their family’s journey through Bipolar Disorder in the New Zealand mental health system. The story will be based on, but not perfectly reflective of, real events.
The website will have four different perspectives in a sidebar (姐姐，妈妈，爸爸，外婆，[弟弟, unclear if want to include]), each with its own colour theme. The user can switch between perspectives.
The user will move through the story chronologically - with a year scroller in a top navigation bar.
The story hopes to start with a brief description of 外婆’s family history in 1936, skip into 妈妈，爸爸’s upbringing and university years in the 1960s-80s, the birth of 姐姐 in 1990, the immigration to NZ, and gradually focus on the main tension of the story - which is 姐姐’s diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, alongside each family members’ conflicts.
Here, the story diverges and gives each member’s recount of their perspectives over the years.
